Susan Deguara has been interested in working on gourds since taking tole painting classes years ago and using them as a “canvas” to create birdhouses and other creative projects. After spending many hours searching the web for ideas, techniques and methods of decorating gourds, she decided to join a local gourd artist chapter, Folsom Gourd Artists, to find out more about techniques like pyrography, carving, inlay, using metal leaf, staining, weaving, painting and even growing her own gourds. She has been a member of the local Folsom chapter for over 20 years, and is also a member of the California Gourd Society and American Gourd Society. Susan is a qualified gourd judge and has been a past officer of the local chapter. She enjoys adapting various decorating techniques to this versatile 3D canvas, and sharing her love of the art with others. She is excited to be a part of the California State Fair Crafts Competition this year.
